Nominees // 71st EMMY AWARDS

Game of Thrones final season sets a new single-season record.

If you've spent any time in L.A. or New York lately, the For Your Consideration campaigns for the upcoming 71st Emmy Awards have been monopolizing most billboards. Finally, the shuffle to earn the most obscure titles and performers is over as the nominations seal the current fates of TV awards season hopefuls.

D'Arcy Carden of The Good Place and Ken Jeong of The Masked Singer did the honors of announcing the nominees in key categories live from the Wolf Theatre at Saban Media Center, located at the Television Academy's campus in North Hollywood.

This year's awards are expected to be focused primarily on Game of Thrones and Veep, two shows which returned to the TV schedule after a year off. The former celebrated its final season, which could give it an awards bump, despite middling reviews.

HBO's dragon drama helped the network earn 137 nominations, the most of any network. It's closest competitor is Netflix, which earned 117 nominations.

A few surprising snubs weren't really snubs at all. The Handmaid's Tale wasn't eligible this year for its third season, so it came up empty in the drama categories. It has played well in Emmys' past. It did surprise with a few guest acting nominations, due o Emmy rules allowing performances in those categories to be eligible after cut-off dates if the s season is continuing to play. The Hulu drama's second season ended after the eligibility period for 2018, meaning a handful of categories could still be part of this year's awards mix. HBO's star-studded Big Little Lies premiered its second season after the eligibility dates. Meryl Streep and the ladies will undoubtedly be walking the red carpet in 2020.

As for records, beyond Game of Thrones setting an all-time high for a single season with 32 nominations for its final season, Lorne Michaels maintains his status as the most-ever nominated individual, with 88 total nominations (including 2 for 2019).

Prime's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel almost broke 30 Rock's single-program record for a comedy series by earning 20 mentions in 2019. 30 Rock picked up 22 in a single year during its run.

A slew of performers received their first-ever Emmys nominations, including: Amy Adams, Paul Dano, Benicio del Toro, Hugh Grant, Mandy Moore, Nick Offerman, Kumail Nanjiani, Rosamund Pike, Billy Porter, Sam Rockwell, and Michelle Williams.

Perhaps the best surprises of this year's list are the inclusion of Pop TV's Schitt's Creek in multiple categories and Netflix's Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, which also picked up multiple nominations.

There were only a few surprise names and projects left off the list. Julia Roberts was expected to earn a mention for her first starring role on TV in Prime's Homecoming. The Oscar-winner didn't make the cut. Better Things' Pamela Adlon had been nominated for two consecutive years, but failed to make the mix this year. In fact, the comedy actress category looked completely different than many had predicted. Tracie Ellis Ross missed for the first time since earning nominations four years in a row for black-ish.

The 71st Emmy Awards will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. It will be preceded by two Creative Arts Emmys ceremonies on Saturday, September 14, 2019, and Sunday, September 145, 2019, at the same location.
