Nominees // 30th PRODUCERS GUILD OF AMERICA AWARDS

Roma and The Favourite earn important nominations from the PGA.

The nominations for the 30th Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced, offering major awards season boosts to several high-profile motion pictures.

Traditionally, the PGA Awards paint the clearest picture of which films end up as Best Picture contenders at the Academy Awards. For the slate of films nominated last year, only two films were not included in the PGA’s list.

This year’s nominees include 10 titles that span box office hits and highbrow, prestige pictures. While this season’s usual favorites Roma and The Favourite made the cut, other honored films include Crazy Rich Asians and Bohemian Rhapsody. The latter has become a surprise awards season contender. Despite poor reviews, the musical biopic has mustered an incredible box office total and a spattering of critics and industry awards, so far.

Missing from the list are Damien Chazelle’s First Man, Barry JenkinsIf Beale Street Could Talk, and Steve McQueen's Widows. All three directors have impressive track records with Academy, with Jenkins' Moonlight and McQueen's 12 Years a Slave past Best Picture winners.

Outside of the main film category, the documentary and animated feature categories look closer to the awards season trends already shown. Free Solo, RBG, and Won’t You Be My Neighbor? are among the documentaries nominated, which were announced in November. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Incredibles 2 are listed among the animated flicks.

The 30th PGA Awards are set for January 19, 2019, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The group will also bestow special awards to Marvel Studios’ Kevin Fiege, actress Jane Fonda, and writer/producer/showrunner Kenya Barris.
