Nominees // 72nd BRITISH ACADEMY OF FILM AND TELEVISION ARTS

The Favourite leads the nominees for the BAFTA Awards.

The British equivalent to the Academy Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, often paints one of the clearest pictures of the awards season, as some thousands of industry members are included in both groups. This season is no different, despite the lack of a clear frontrunner, as the same crop of titles leads the nominees for the 72nd BAFTA Awards.

Understandably, Yorgos Lanthimos' costume comedy The Favourite earned the most mentions. Its 12 nominations include nods for Picture, Director, Actress, and Supporting Actress for both Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.

Both Bradley Cooper and Alfonso Cuaron earned five nominations in five separate categories, a record they are likely to hold on to for a while. In fact, with Cooper's five nominations, he now ties Daniel Day-Lewis with seven career nominations.

With BAFTA's help, a few Oscar categories are starting to really take form. The Best Actress race, for instance, seemed to be a tight fight between Glenn Close and Lady Gaga. But, Olivia Colman has now become the name to beat, with Close right behind. Close's Golden Globes acceptance speech will definitely help her during this final stretch.

Spike Lee finally earned his first ever BAFTA nominations, including one for Best Director for BlacKkKlansman. But, Lee's directing nod will be overshadowed by the fact that, for the fifth year in a row, not a single woman director was nominated. This is especially surprising after the influx of critically-acclaimed films by women directors in 2018, including Brit Lynne Ramsay.

As for the biggest omission from the list, If Beale Street Could Talk's Regina King failed to earn a mention. Arguably in her place is Margot Robbie, whose turn in Mary Queen of Scots was an earlier prediction in the awards season, but seemed to flounder in recent months.

The 72nd BAFTA Awards will take place February 10, 2019, at the Royal Albert Hall. Joanna Lumley will host.
