Nominees // 91st ACADEMY AWARDS

Roma and The Favourite lead the nominations for the 91st Oscars.

Oscar-nominated writer Kumail Nanjiani and actress Tracee Ellis Ross announced the nominees in all 24 categories for the 91st Academy Awards live from the Academy's Beverly Hills headquarters.

Roma and The Favourite tied for the most nominations, with 10 apiece. Roma's nomination for Best Picture marked the first nomination of its kind for Netflix. Black Panther also made waves as the first superhero film to ever receive a Best Picture nomination.

While Roma has been a steady awards season favorite, more popular films like A Star is Born and Green Book earned multiple nominations, as well. Lady Gaga will compete in two categories: Best Leading Actress and Best Song. She'll have stiff competition from Glenn Close, in the former, whose become the category's frontrunner. This is Close's seventh Oscar nomination. She's never won. If she fails to win this year, she'll pass Thelma Ritter and Deborah Kerr as the actress with the most losses in Oscar history.

In the acting races, especially, there were a few surprises. Both Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira earned nods for Roma. Willem Dafoe edged in for a Leading Actor nomination. But, Timothée Chalamet was left out of the Supporting Actor race. All three stars of The Favourite, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz, earned nominations. Colman could upset in the Leading Actress category to take the win.

Noticeable absences on the list include spare mentions of First Man and If Beale Street Could Talk. Both earned several nods, but failed to show up in key categories. And, documentary hit Won't You Be My Neighbor? is being left empty-handed after missing out on the Documentary Feature category. Eighth Grade had been seen by some to be a strong contender for the Original Screenplay category, but fell short. And, the 'boy movies' Beautiful Boy, Boy Erased, and Ben is Back, earned a total of zero mentions.

The directing category shifted a bit from the predicted list of names. Bradley Cooper didn't make the cut, having to compete in Leading Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture, instead. But, Spike Lee did make the cut, marking the prolific filmmaker's first-ever Oscar nomination in the directing category. No female directors were nominated this year.

History was made in a few categories. Hannah Beachler is now the first African American to ever be nominated for Best Production Design. Her nomination is for her work on Black Panther. Also, Cuaron now ties Orson Welles and Warren Beatty as being a four-time nominee in the same year, for the same film. Welles was the first to set the record in 1942 with his film Citizen Kane. Beatty followed suit in 1979 for Heaven Can Wait. He later repeated the feat at the 1982 Oscars with Reds.

Academy members from each 17 branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories, with the exception of Animated FEature Film and Foreign Language Film, which are voted on by multiple branches. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Winners will be determined through a second round of voting open to all active members. Voting occurs February 12, 2019, to February 19, 2019.

The 91st Academy Awards will be held Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. The awards will be telecast on ABC as well as in 225 countries and territories worldwide.
