Predictions // 92nd ACADEMY AWARDS - June 2019

Is the summer season doing us any favors?

Last updated: June 30, 2019

While the summer movie season has always been hit-or-miss when it comes to the awards race, in recent years a few lucky titles have emerged as awards darlings. In 2019, that's far from the case. The films that seem the most likely to have an abundance of good graces have failed to earn the commercial success needed to make the long walk to the Oscars stage.

Olivia Wilde's Booksmart seemed like the most likely contender to break out, with Juno-like attention predicted. But, the film has come and gone without much fanfare. Toy Story 4 had a monster opening (despite being under studio expectations), but it hasn't earned the raves its predecessor did. Aladdin has floundered as an awards hit, and The Lion King is likely to follow suit in a few weeks.

Even the indie, arthouse scene has yet to yield a major contender. The Last Black Man in San Francisco has proved to be a bit divisive and far from the ground swelling hit A24 was hoping it'd be. Late Night is Sundance's largest sell in history, with Amazon earning the opportunity to roll it out. Unfortunately, the comedy has bubbled under since it released a few weeks ago, with most cinemas already phasing it out.

Because of this quiet awards bait year, all sights are set on what's left to come. Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will finally be seen by the masses in a few weeks on its way to hopeful Oscar gold. Dramatic epics like Harriet, 1917, and The Irishman should release trailers soon.

We're also just weeks away from film festival announcements, which will paint a clearer picture on the titles on which studios will be banking come awards time. This marks another grey spot in the year. By this point in the past few years, we were aware films like La La Land were heavy-hitters as we waited to see which festivals would premiere first. This year, there isn't yet a high-flying title we're all itching to see.
