Predictions // 92nd ACADEMY AWARDS - May 2019

How has Cannes changed the awards race?

Last updated: May 26, 2019

With Bong Joon-ho's Parasite winning the Palme d'Or at this year's 72nd Cannes Film Festival, the South Korean drama could secure a Foreign Language Oscar run. Its chances all depend on if the film earns a stateside release in 2019. And, good to remember, the Cannes winner isn't always a for-sure Oscar player.

Other Cannes premieres have a better chance at showing up throughout the awards season, including A Hidden Life (Terrence Malick's newest), Pain and Glory (Pedro Almodovar's semi-autobiographical film that could earn Antonio Banderas an Oscar nom), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino's much-anticipated 10th film).

The latter went into the Cannes fest with the most buzz and has left mostly positive reviews in its wake. Tarantino isn't a surefire bet as of late, but stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are expected to receive major awards season pushes.

Another buzzed-about film that received its first public showings was Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman. The film earned raves for the film's star, Taron Egerton, who plays Elton John. Egerton performs his own vocals in the film, which should set him apart from last year's acting winner Rami Malek, but the similarities between Rocketman and Bohemian Rhapsody could keep some voters from giving it a shot.

As already mentioned, Banderas has erupted as an awards season favorite after picking up the Best Actor award from the Cannes jury. His performance in Pain and Glory could net him his first-ever Oscar nomination.

Other potential Oscar-worthy performances critics noted from Cannes include Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson in The Lighthouse and Isabelle Huppert and Marisa Tomei in Frankie.

Since April, reviews and box office numbers have shifted a few potential Oscar players. But, the most anticipated titles have yet to receive screenings in public forums. Aladdin, which premiered this weekend for the Memorial Day holiday, has earned a decent amount of money, but critics and filmgoers have not been kind to the live-action adaptation. The Lion King has a lot to live up to. And, Booksmart, a seminal hit from SXSW, hasn't quite earned the box office digits it was expected to receive. Plus, Avengers: Endgame's raves have started to drastically dwindle, with the film falling a little short from becoming the highest-grossing film of all time.

Stay tuned as the summer release calendar could give us some true hits and misses that will shake things up. Plus, studios will start confirming release dates for awards season films and may even start confirming fall festival release information.
