Predictions // 92nd ACADEMY AWARDS - October 2019

Netflix could score three Best Picture nominations.

Last updated: October 31, 2019

Award voting bodies are now watching as many movies as possible, around the early awards season events, that Is. Between the Gotham Awards nominations being announced, to the Governors Awards (where anyone hoping to earn a nomination was present), awards season is in full swing.

Screeners are slowly being delivered to critics groups and union members. Academy members are trying to figure out the new screening website. And, red carpet premieres are offering Hollywood's luckiest with front row seats to the last of the year's eagerly awaited titles.

The changes this brings to the list of potential nominees? Quite a few, in fact!

Little Women isn't shaping up to be the awards season darling many figured, though Saoirse Ronan should still prepare another visit to the Oscars. Florence Pugh, who is said to be the scene-stealer of Greta Gerwig's literary adaptation, could also see her own invite to Hollywood's biggest night. The film itself, however, has been removed from the Best Picture list. In its place? The Two Popes.

Netflix could follow up its stellar Roma year with a number of entries. The Two Popes will compete against The Irishman and Marriage Story, though the former has the better awards season angle. The latter has the best chance at the Best Actor win for Adam Driver. That category is gearing up to be one of the hottest this season.

Eddie Murphy is now expected to be in contention for Dolemite is My Name, which sent Antonio Banderas off the list (though, Leonardo DiCaprio was 'this' close).

Brad Pitt has said he's not campaigning this year, but that may work out in his favor in the Supporting Actor race. His turn in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is the frontrunner.

In Supporting Actress, the same goes for Laura Dern, who would be earning a career-acknowledgment award on top of the best-of-her-career reviews she's getting for Marriage Story.

We should get a clearer picture in the coming weeks of the International Feature, Documentary Feature, and other under-the-radar categories as shortlists are revealed.

The nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on January 13, 2020. The Oscars will be held Sunday, February 9, 2020.
