Predictions // 92nd ACADEMY AWARDS

Updated: Mar 21, 2019

Quentin Tarantino could finally add Best Picture to his film pedigree.

Last updated: March 21, 2019

The 91st Academy Awards are barely behind us, but after the debacle of the 2018-19 awards season, it's time to look ahead to the fresh crop of films on the horizon.

So far, 2019 has yet to show us an early contender, like last year's Black Panther or the year before's Get Out. The springtime movie calendar has a few blockbuster titles, including this weekend's Captain Marvel. But, the first possible potential Oscar favorite comes at the end of March in the form of Jordan Peele's Us. After its SXSW premiere, rave reviews have already labeled it a masterpiece.

Peele, whose Get Out earned the Oscar for Original Screenplay, will have an uphill climb to glory with the other films filling the weekends between now and December. Quentin Tarantino has Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in his holster. The much-buzzed-about mid-century period piece has been a pop culture phenom throughout production. If all goes well, we should see it compete as the year's top contender. Currently we're expecting it to earn 12 nods, including mentions for Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie.

Tom Hooper's Cats will either be a huge player or one of the year's major disappointments. There's not much room for any other outcome with a star-studded cast and a musical that both had an impressive stage run, but is easy fodder for essentially being a productions with adults dressed in cat costumes. Hooper had a hit with Les Miserables, boosting Anne Hathaway to an Oscar win. Could Jennifer Hudson or even Taylor Swift be next?

Will Netflix have a hand in the game this time around? Martin Scorsese has already secured a theatrical run for The Irishman, his next project that reunites Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The streaming service almost captured a win with Roma, but industry skepticism could still keep it from attaining awards gold.

Lady Bird fans will be keeping their eyes on Greta Gerwig's highly-anticipated adaptation of Little Women, with Saoirse Ronan starring as Jo. Ronan could pick up another Oscar nomination and Gerwig could return to the Directors race. The film is getting a Christmas release, which is huge.

The films bubbling under right now are films like Harriet (starring Cynthia Erivo), The Report (with a reported star turn by Annette Bening), and 1917 (the long-awaited screen return from director Sam Mendes). Plus, can Mister Rogers finally make it to the Oscars after last year's Won't You Be My Neighbor? was shut out? Tom Hanks stars as the television icon in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood from director Marielle Heller.

In the next few months, a few categories will begin to flesh out as the Cannes Film Festival ushers in the summer blockbuster season, which leads to the fall film festival season and then the holiday awards season. If this past year taught us anything, literally anything could happen and awards season will be here before we know it.
