Predictions // 92nd ACADEMY AWARDS - April 2019

Will Cannes lead to Oscar glory for Terrence Malick?

Last updated: April 28, 2019

The Cannes Film Fest has announced its lineup, though the world's "most famous" film festival hasn't delivered a major Oscar player since Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life won the Palme d'Or in 2011 before being nominated for Best Picture in 2012. Malick returns to the fray this year with A Hidden Life, his WWII drama that's said to be a return to the director's Badlands roots.

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was, reportedly, not ready for the Cannes lineup. But, festival organizers have hinted that if the Pulp Fiction director can finish in time, they'll give it a spot. If the film, which is currently the year's front-runner, premieres in France, it would do so on the 25th anniversary of Pulp Fiction also premiering on the Croisette.

Many of the awards season's best bets have yet to be screened (or even completed), which is different than in years past. Avengers: Endgame blasted into the record books with its April debut, but it hasn't sparked the same Oscar conversation that Black Panther did last year. And, Jordan Peele's Us has turned quiet over the past few weeks.

It remains to be seen how Netflix's 2019 slate will do. Currently, The Irishman has the most buzz. The Laundromat could be a major player. And, The King checks a lot of boxes (including having Timothee Chalamet in its cast), but medieval costume dramas haven't fared well in recent years.

In the next few months, a few categories will begin to flesh out as the Cannes Film Festival ushers in the summer blockbuster season, which leads to the fall film festival season and then the holiday awards season. If this past year taught us anything, literally anything could happen and awards season will be here before we know it.
