Reviews // 2019 VENICE FILM FESTIVAL RECAP

Joker sets itself up for success.

The 76th Venice Film Festival kicked off August 29th with the world premiere of Hirokazu Kore-eda's The Truth.

Over the course of ten days, films from the world's greatest auteurs were screened alongside newcomers and Hollywood studio flicks. The most talked about film was, undoubtedly, Todd Phillips's Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. The wild, R-rated take on the comic book villain earned an almost-10 minute standing ovation and praise for its star. But, most critics were quick to point out that the film will be divisive, especially with regard to America's current political and societal climate.

Other high level premieres include Netflix's The King, starring Timothée Chalamet, The Laundromat from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep, and Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story.

Some films haven't received quite the coverage of others, but will still be using their time at Venice to fuel distribution deals or awards season attention. Nate Parker, whose career careened after a sex scandal at the same time his debut film, Birth of a Nation, debuted, premiered his newest film, American Skin. Though the movie received a minutes-long ovation from the international audience, the film has a long way to go to receive a steady American release.

Here's a quick look at some of the reviews that are pouring out of the festival from come of the world's leading film publications:
