Winners // 2019 NEW YORK FILM CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS

Laura Dern picks up a double Supporting Actress win.

It's still too early to pick an official front-runner, but by the looks of it, The Irishman is at least enjoying a good week, so far. The Martin Scorsese crime drama earned the Best Picture prize from the New York Film Critics Circle after also picking up the same prize yesterday from the National Board of Review.

Founded in 1935, the NYFCC is a critics group made up of writers from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, and online publications. One thing Oscar watchers love about the NYFCC is their sometimes oddball choices. This year's crop of winners feels pretty standard and expected, but it is fun to see winners like Lupita Nyong'o, who earned the Best Actress prize for Us. It's doubtful the Academy will be as daring as to look at performances like hers.
