Winners // 29th IFP GOTHAM AWARDS

Netflix earned a total of six wins during the first U.S. awards ceremony of the season.

The IFP (Independent Filmmaker Project) Gotham Awards celebrate the best in independent cinema each year and traditionally mark the first major awards ceremony in the U.S.

This year's ceremony, held at Cipriani Wall Street, was expected to be a major night for both Netflix and A24 as each studio had multiple projects nominated. Marriage Story, The Farewell, Uncut Gems, and The Last Black Man in San Francisco led the nominations with three each. Marriage Story reigned supreme by not only winning all three of its nominated categories, but the drama also picked up the audience award.

In fact, Netflix ended the evening with six wins, overall. In addition to Marriage Story's wins, Netflix's American Factory won Best Documentary and Netflix's When They See Us earned the award for Best Television Series - Long Form.

Perhaps the most surprising win of the night was Awkwafina's win for Best Actress for her work in The Farewell. When accepting her award, the actress and comedian gave special praise to grandmothers.
