Winners // '1917' & 'ONCE UPON A TIME...' EARN TOP HONORS AT THE 77th GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

Quentin Tarantino's salute to the '60s in Hollywood took home the most wins.

The 77th Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton and hosted by Ricky Gervais, who started the evening off with a set of scathing jokes. Noting it would be his last time hosting the awards show, Gervais didn't let up calling out director Martin Scorsese and sharing crass jokes about the likes of James Cordon and Judi Dench.

His spiel had some laughing and others guffawing, but it was the evening's presenters who allowed the evening to carry on with a sense of sentimentality and brevity. Kate McKinnon's tribute to Ellen DeGeneres (recipient of the Carol Burnett Award) and Charlize Theron's tribute to Tom Hanks (recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award) were especially memorable.

Though many winners were expected (including Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood's Best Picture, Musical/Comedy win), there were a handful of surprises. The most notable were Missing Link's triumph in the Animated Feature category (Frozen II and Toy Story 4 were the favorites) and composer Hildur Guonadottir's win for Original Score for Joker.

In fact, Todd Phillips's comic book villain film gave Joaquin Phoenix his first opportunity to give an acceptance speech on the international stage ahead of the Academy Awards.

Phoenix is predicted to be the eventual Oscar winner, as are tonight's other major acting winners Renée Zellweger (Judy), Laura Dern (Marriage Story), and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood).

The evening's most exciting win was Awkwafina's Best Actress, Musical/Comedy for The Farewell. It marks the first time an actor of Asian descent has won a major acting award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
