Winners // 24th CRITICS' CHOICE AWARDS

Two category ties highlight a night of awards.

Steadied by the blue carpet leading into the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, the 24th Critics' Choice Awards inserted itself as an important piece of this awards season. From inspiring acceptance speeches by the likes of Regina King and the steady pace at which the awards were given, it was an awards night to be had.

With a far-reaching number of categories (perhaps genre-specific film categories should be left off the ballot next year, or at least off the live show?), we were left with quick category recaps at several times throughout the night. This also meant some awards, like Best Foreign Film and both Screenplay categories, were announced during the blue carpet coverage.

But, the night wasn't without fun surprises. Amy Adams and Patricia Arquette tied for the Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie award and tagteamed their acceptance speeches at the podium. Glenn Close and Lady Gaga tied for the Best Actress film award, leading to what will be the night's most captivating moment. Close's speech about women and empowerment was followed by Gaga's first televised acting win. Her emotional tribute to A Star is Born could be enough to catapult her to the Oscar race.

The general lot of winners who've shaped awards season this go-around were winners here, with names like Darren Criss, Alfonso Cuarón, Rachel Brosnahan, and Mahershala Ali being called. Sandra Oh repeated her Golden Globes win with another TV Actress in a Drama win for Killing Eve. And, First Man picked up a win that should end up being a guaranteed Oscar win: Best Original Score.

As a live show, the noticeable absence of some of the season's biggest stars, like the entire cast of The Favourite, made for too many "_____________ isn't here tonight, but we accept on their behalf." But, host Taye Diggs breathed life into a potential stagnant awards show setup.

The 24th Critics' Choice Awards were celebrated at a ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and broadcast live on The CW.
