Winners // 25th SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

Black Panther puts its hat in the ring for the Oscar; Emily Blunt surprises with an A Quiet Place win.

Traditionally, the recipient of the Screen Actors Guild's Ensemble Cast award is a strong indicator of how the Actors branch of the Academy could vote. In recent years, that hasn't been the case, as the casts of films like American Hustle and Hidden Figures walked away with wins. This year, the cast of Black Panther could have just ushered in a year of change with its massive top win of the night.

The Marvel adaptation is the first comic book/superhero film to receive a nomination for the Academy's Best Picture award. It's awards season race has been one for the history books, but it's been looked over when it came to actual wins.

Among the cast members are legends such as Angela Bassett and Forest Whitaker, Oscar nominees and winners like Daniel Kaluuya and Lupita Nyong'o, and Hollywood newcomers Chadwick Boseman and Letitia Wright. Cast member Sterling K. Brown marked the night as a double winner, also picking up a trophy as a part of the ensemble cast of NBC's This Is Us.

The night's most unexpected win was Emily Blunt's for Supporting Female Actor in A Quiet Place. Arguably one of the season's most interesting races, the supporting actress race is up in the air. Blunt was left off of the Academy's list of nominees.

On the television side, Amazon Prime's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel swept the comedy series awards. Its star, Rachel Brosnahan, has been an awards season favorite at each precursor this year, with wins at the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes before tonight.

Prior to the live broadcast of the awards, the recipients of the motion picture and television stunt ensemble awards were announced. Black Panther picked up a separate win here, alongside Netflix's Glow.

Megan Mullally hosted the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
