Winners // 31st AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS AWARDS

At a ceremony held in the Ray Dolby Ballroom, the American Society of Cinematographers awarded Lion its highest award, giving a much-needed shift to the general awards season conversation.

La La Land's impressive camerawork by Linus Sandgren was expected to be the night's winner, and is still considered the frontrunner for the Academy Awards. But, it was Australia's Greig Fraser who took home the top honors for his sweeping images in Lion.

Traditionally, the ASC Award winner has ended the season as the Oscar winner, with few exceptions. Should Fraser follow up, like last year's Emmanuel Lubezki for The Revenant, the cinematography win could put a hold on La La Land's expected record-breaking sweep at the Oscars.
