Winners // 72nd TONY AWARDS

Angels in America and The Band's Visit take top honors from the American Theater Wing.

Going into the 72nd Tony Awards, Disney's Frozen was the season's highest earner and SpongeBob and Mean Girls were the most buzzed about musicals to hit the Great White Way. Plus, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child had become the biggest budgeted play to ever play Broadway. The season may not have had a pop culture phenom like Dear Even Hanson or Hamilton, but the offerings were definitely a mixed bag of highbrow and high concept that came at a time of divisive change among the arts.

The awards ceremony, hosted by Sara Barielles and Josh Groban, tried to punch up the funny and entertaining, but allowed for somber and political moments to shine brighter, understandably so. One of the more viral moments came from presenter Robert De Niro, who began his moment on stage with an unscripted, "F*** Trump!"

The dramatic arts student of Parkland, Florida's Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High performed a muted, but beautiful, rendition of Rent's "Seasons of Love," eliciting tears and a standing ovation from the crowd. The school's theater teacher, Melody Herzfeld, received the Excellence in Theater Education award.

Though it didn't have the recognized name like its predecessors, The Band's Visit became the night's big winner, picking up multiple acting awards on top of being named Best Musical. Frozen and Mean Girls went home empty-handed, with SpongeBob winning a scenic design award and nothing else.

For plays, Harry Potter picked up major awards as the Best Play, while the revival of Angels in America earned multiple acting awards for its stars, including Andrew Garfield and Nathan Lane, plus Best Revival of a Play.
