Winners // 74th GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

Hollywood's second greatest night of the year saw a last-minute win for awards season favorite Moonlight, winner of Best Picture (Drama), and a record-breaking night for Oscar frontrunner La La Land, winner of Best Picture (Comedy/Musical).

The 74th Golden Globe Awards mark the first major awards ceremony of the season, celebrating the best in 2016's film and television. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globes started the evening with some surprising choices.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson picked up the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his work in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals, beating the predicted Mahershala Ali for Moonlight. Ali's loss would be the first of many empty categories for Barry Jenkins' drama. But, the film went on to pick up the last award of the night: Best Picture, Drama.

Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land was easily the night's biggest winner, picking up a record-breaking 7 awards, beating the records set by classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Awards won by the film include Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Actress, Original Song, and Original Score. The film is expected to repeat many of those wins at next month's Academy Awards.

On the television side, awards were presented to freshmen series The Crown and Atlanta. Both series also took home acting honors; Claire Foy won Best TV Actress (Drama) and Donald Glover won Best TV Actor (Comedy/Musical), respectively.

Jimmy Fallon hosted the ceremony, which was mostly tame and far from overtly political tones, despite occurring just months after the presidential election. Meryl Streep, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement, used her acceptance speech to give the evening its most politically-driven moment.
